Royal Shakespeare Awards

The Evening Standard Drama Awards for 1961 have gone almost exclusively to the Royal Shakespeare Theatre Company.  Their production of Becket has been judged the Best Play of the Year, Vanessa Redgrave has been voted Best Actress of the Year for her performance in The Taming of the Shrew, and Christopher Plummer has carried off the laurels for Best Actor of the Year with his performance in Becket.

The Aldwych company could not, unfortunately, qualify for the two remaining awards--the Best Review of the Year and the Most Promising Playwrights of the Year.  These have gone respectively to Beyond the Fringe and, jointly to Henry Livings, author of Stop It Whoever You Are and Big Soft Nellie, and Gwyn Thomas, author of The Keep.
